It was late at night on September 11 in Beijing when my mom called me from the U.S. to tell me about the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
Internet was super slow back then and the local Chinese stations were not yet covering anything. I ran next door and woke up my teammate, Amy, to tell her.
Since we had hundreds of Americans working around the country that we were responsible for, we decided we needed to get to a TV. So we jumped into a taxi and went to the nearest foreign hotel we knew had access to CNN coverage.
We sat up all night watching, like everyone else in the world, stunned at what we were seeing. By morning, we had a plan in place to contact everyone around the country to let them know what had happened.
There are so many stories from that day, and many of them are being re-told today. One that I came across recently is the story of the boat lift of a half million people from Manhattan. It’s an amazing story.
