A few months ago, on a tip from a friend, I discovered an Indian grocery store in the Twin Cities, called Pooja. For those of you in this area, it’s located in the funny little suburb of Hilltop. I say funny because it’s just 16 blocks smack dab in the middle of Columbia Heights — that is not part of Columbia Heights.
But I digress….
Earlier this week I popped in to pick up some namkeen – spicy crunch snacks. When I walked in the front door, I was greeted by this colorful rickshaw.

I stopped for a moment as the memories flooded back. Growing up in Karachi, Pakistan, these rickshaws were a main source of transportation for us. How we survived the blue-smoke belching, white-knuckle rides, I’ll never know. I do remember them being great fun, though!
I chatted with the check-out clerk a bit and told her that its presence in her store made me nostalgic since I’d spent a good part of my childhood in the back of one. She told me she missed them as well.
Now I have yet another reason to make regular trips to Pooja.
